Joe Biden’s approval rating drops ahead of State of the Union

(Prensa Latina) As President Joe Biden prepares to deliver his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, fewer than half of Americans approve of the job he’s doing as president.

While 41% of Americans approved of the work Joe Biden is doing, 56% disapproved, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll. The numbers diverged even more when Americans were asked about the state of the country: Just 33% of Americans said their country is going in the right direction, while 67% said the country is on the wrong track.

Biden’s address – what could have been an opportunity for him to tout his accomplishments, highlight a turning point in the pandemic and turbocharge his stalled domestic agenda- comes at a trying time for the administration as Americans grapple with rising prices and Joe Biden deals with the most consequential foreign policy crisis of his young presidency.

In Tuesday’s speech, Biden is expected to highlight his work to build an international response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, as warnings of a split-screen moment surface, with Russian forces closing in on Ukraine’s capital.

The latest data is on track with RealClearPolitics’ average job approval rating for Biden, which shows that 40.6% of Americans approve of Biden’s performance, while 54.4% disapprove. The president’s poll numbers have gradually trended down since the start of his presidency, taking a steeper dip when the Delta variant of the coronavirus ravaged the U.S. The Afghanistan withdrawal and the ongoing southern border crisis piled on to the president’s already-sinking approval ratings.
