(Prensa Latina) As long as Julian Assange remains in prison, there will be no freedom of speech or press in the Western world, Stella Moris, the Australian journalist’s partner, warned in a video released by WikiLeaks on Tuesday.
According to the media platform, Moris made the warning after receiving the Karl Renner Solidarity Award given to Assange by the Austrian Journalists Club.
The award reminds all those responsible for his incarceration that having him in prison is an affront to journalism; the recognition constitutes an ‘antidote’ against attempts to isolate and demoralize the father of his two children, Morris affirmed.
Assange has been holed up in Belmarsh since the Government of Ecuador stripped him of the diplomatic protection granted to him seven years earlier, and allowed the British Police to enter the embassy in London to arrest him on April 11, 2019.
Although he has not been accused of any charges after serving a 50-week prison sentence for violating bail in 2012, the British judiciary decided to keep him in the maximum security prison until the extradition case brought by the United States is concluded.
Moris, who stressed that his partner is a political prisoner and a prisoner of conscience, said that the extradition case seeks to set a precedent about what could happen to other journalists for divulging uncomfortable truths for governments
