German legislators oppose sanctions against Russia

(Prensa Latina) The parliamentary group Alternatives for Germany today opposed sanctions against Russia due to the situation in Ukraine, local sources reported.

The group’s honorary chairman, Alexander Gauland, as well as its official representative on foreign policy, Peter Bystron, in a statement blamed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and its member countries for the current situation in the region.

They say the crisis is a consequence of NATO’s eastward expansion after the end of the Cold War, contrary to all agreements with Moscow.

The parliamentarians are sure that the West violated Russia’s legitimate security interests in this way.

In its statement, the party leaders rejected sanctions against the Eurasian country that will lead to further escalation in the region and called on all parties to take steps to calm the situation through negotiations.

The day before, Russia recognized the sovereignty of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and ratified friendship, cooperation and aid agreements with them.

In response, Western powers, led by the United States, announced strong trade sanctions against Russia as well as Donetsk and Lugansk.
