Ecuador will produce Sinovac vaccines

Chinese company presented a plan for the next 10 years.

After a long negotiation with China, the Ministry of Public Health announced that the vaccine from the China Sinovac company can be produced in Ecuador. The announcement comes after the Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, held a meeting with representatives of the company on Friday, February 11, 2022.

In said meeting, the Latin American Operations Manager for Sinovac, Jack Tang, gave the green light to the execution of this project in the country.

However, the project is still at a very early stage and the Asian company Sinovac presented a tentative calendar of scheduled activities that are expected to take place until 2032.

Said schedule divides the activities into 3 stages: short-term, which corresponds to actions to be carried out between one and two years; medium term, from three to five years; and in the long term, from five to eight years.

With the results of the first studies and logistical evaluations, it will be possible to determine where the production plant will be installed, what technologies and instruments will have to be imported and what will be the legal mechanism with which work will begin; finally, and once these requirements and guarantees have been obtained, the contract that will start the production of the vaccines in Ecuadorian territory can be signed.

However, the Government clarified that it will work with other State entities, in an intersectoral manner, to achieve a functional institutionalization of the process that will be headed by the Ministry of Public Health.

Thus, it is expected that in the coming days a meeting can be held with the Secretariat of Public-Private Associations, with the goal of being able to meet the objectives and requirements set by the Chinese pharmaceutical company.

Despite this long road that must still be traveled before obtaining the first vaccines against the Coronavirus manufactured in national territory, the MSP has been optimistic, since it will seek in the future to ensure that clinical trials and studies are carried out in Ecuador, with the objective to transfer technical and scientific knowledge to Ecuadorian professionals, and for this a series of workshops and training sessions will also be coordinated by the Ministry of Education.
