In Ecuador, children 3 and 4 years old will be able to be vaccinated against COVID-19 from February 21

The Ministry of Health announced that vaccination will be extended throughout the country.

Through an official statement, the Ministry of Public Health announced that infants between 3 and 4 years old will be able to access vaccination against COVID-19 in Ecuador.

Minors will be vaccinated with doses of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine, starting on February 21, 2022, since the authorities anticipate that the doses for minors will arrive in the country on February 17 and, from that day, it will begin with distribution logistics in Ecuador.

The vaccine, which has the support of the Ecuadorian Society of Pediatrics, works under attenuated virus technology, which uses virus particles so that the body can recognize it and fight the disease through the defenses of its own immune system, so it does not represents no invasive risk for the infant.

The vaccine, which is similar to the polio and measles vaccines, which have been applied throughout the world for more than 100 years, will reduce the risk of presenting severe symptoms in children.

According to the deputy minister of health, this new vaccination process will be carried out as on previous occasions, so several immunization points will also be set up and various community brigades will be deployed that will be mobilized in the country.

At the end of last year, the vaccine from the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac was already used for the vaccination campaign that allowed children and adolescents from the age of 5 to be inoculated and it is estimated that around 2,010,000 students in that age range could benefit from the two doses of said vaccine.

In the case of minors, 60% of children between 5 and 11 years old are fully vaccinated, while adolescents between 12 and 17 years old reach 75%.
