Unicef praises Panama operation against minors trafficking

(Prensa Latina) The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) recognized the work of Panama in dismantling a network dedicated to the sexual exploitation of minors, and the attention now provided to victims of this scourge.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, during the week an operation Luz de Esperanza (Light of Hope) was carried out, which dismantled a gang dedicated to these abuses in the district of Baru, province of Chiriqui and the border with Costa Rica.

Nine minors, between the ages of four and 12 years old, were recovered in the operation.

Two of the women detained were relatives of the victims; they made it easier the entry and exit of the minors from the national territory, La Estrella de Panama daily quoted the senior prosecutor against Organized Crime, Emeldo Marquez as saying.

In San Jose, one person was also arrested, an investigation that in the neighboring country has produced the first results, he added.

The investigation for these facts arose on December 16, 2021, when a complaint was filed at the sub-regional office of the Prosecutor’s Office in the Chirica region of Baru.
