Control tower at newest airport in Mexico is already operational

(Prensa Latina) Mexico’s newest international air terminal, the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), originally the Santa Lucia Airport, is currently operational although construction works are still 49 days away from completion, authorities reported on Tuesday.

The control tower handles between 40 and 60 military flights a day, and it was confirmed that by March 21 the number of daily commercial operations will equal and even surpass the traffic at the current international airport of Mexico City.

Octavio Carrera, supervisor of Navigation Services in the Mexican Air Space, explained that a team of 16 air traffic controllers works in the 88-meter-high tower after two years of training.

He stated that the military runway is operational, while the first planned commercial runway is already built and is currently undergoing cleanup works, while the second one is having its signalization systems installed.

The supervisor considered that AIFA will be a very safe airport after it starts up operations, and procedures and instruments will comply with international regulations, without any problem.

For his part, Colonel Benito Pavon, who is responsible for the construction of the control tower, explained that this work alone had an investment of 600 million pesos (30 million dollars) and employed almost two thousand workers.
