Minister of Education confirms that there are 42 active cases of coronavirus in the educational system of Ecuador

The Minister of Education, María Brown, announced that there are 42 active coronavirus cases reported in educational institutions.

In a radio interview, Brown said that none of these cases recorded in students and teachers is complicated.

With this background, she stated that institutions that have not had reported cases of Covid-19 can attend in person, respecting distance, permitted capacity and biosecurity measures.

She added that the vaccination brigades for students and teachers will continue. The latter already began to receive the third dose.

Under this criterion, she insisted that education in the country cannot be closed again. Although she maintained that the priority should be health, also the human right to education.

With the arrival of the Ómicron variant, the authorities delayed the mandatory face-to-face return to classes, with 100% capacity in all schools authorized for face-to-face modality. In the Sierra – Amazonía regime, this plan will be executed from February 7, with the beginning of the second semester. While in the Costa regime classes will end virtually and the mandatory face-to-face return will be from May 3.

Although the president of the National Emergency Operations Committee (National COE), Juan Zapata, mentioned that these dates could vary, since they are subject to the epidemiological situation, so new provisions are not ruled out.

The rectors of educational establishments also took more rigorous measures to avoid contagion after the Christmas and New Year’s festivities.

Vinicio Aldaz, representative of the union of private institutions, indicated that the private educational institutions that applied their Institutional Plan for Educational Continuity (PICE) began the year 2022 with virtual classes, as a precautionary measure.

The manager specified that it is planned not to enter this first week of January in person.

On December 27, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reported that in epidemiological week number 50, which ended on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, more infected were registered nationwide and among those were 150 minors who contracted the virus, although almost no one was hospitalized for being asymptomatic.

During December, some schools alerted about positive cases and applied epidemiological fences as containment measures.

There are 4,309,139 students in the country and it is known that at least 2 million attend regular classes.
