(Prensa Latina) Two days before the legislative elections in Portugal, the two most important parties are almost equal in voter preferences, according to results of the two polls published today.
The Socialists (PS) of Prime Minister Antonio Cost and the Social Democrats (PSD) of the former Mayor of Porto Rui Rio are neck and neck, with a lead of just two percentage points for the PSD.
More than 10.8 million people are summoned to the polls in these elections that will culminate on Sunday and were brought forward in the middle of the legislature after the parliamentary rejection of the 2022 Budget prepared by the acting Government.
With percentages higher than 30, both parties are very distant from the rest, which only have 5 and 6 points in voting intention.
Last Sunday, 300,000 voters in the country voted in advance, a measure adopted to avoid crowds on voting day.
On that day, the Oporto city Mayor (north), Rui Moreira, received Prime Minister Costa who voted there and described the election as “a unique moment in which citizens decide”.
The host expressed corncern on the possibility that many voters will not vote due to the pandemic and recognized the voting in advance as an attempt to reduce abstention in a country where this exercise by mail is not contemplated.
On the other hand, opposition leader Rio accused the Socialists of not having a strategy and limiting themselves to criticizing.
