Covid-19 daily death toll rises in Uruguay

(Prensa Latina) Uruguay on Thursday reported 29 deaths due to complications related to Covid-19, the highest daily figure recorded in almost seven months, in a community spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in its Delta and Omicron variants.

The Uruguay National Emergency System reported that of 23,657 PCR tests made, 11,690 new cases were detected, equivalent to a 49-percent Covid-19 positivity rate, the highest figure so far.

Of 76,010 active patients nationwide, 122 of them are being treated in intensive care units.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) is increasing its campaign so that the population get vaccinated. Only 50 percent of them have completed the three doses.

Infectologist Susana Cabrera and other experts expressed “lack of confidence” in changes in the MSP’s criteria regarding the use of antigen tests limited to symptomatic suspects.
