Starting this Wednesday, January 12, 2022, the coronavirus vaccination card or certificate will begin to be required in public transport in Quito. This was announced by Mayor Santiago Guarderas.
The mayor explained that as in shopping centers or markets, in the transport service it will be necessary to present the document that certifies that the passenger is vaccinated against the virus.
However, Guarderas did not specify whether this requirement will be mandatory to get on the buses, but reported that the inoculation certificate must be presented by all people over 12 years of age.
In the meantime, from Monday, January 17, the card will be required for children five years of age and older. Likewise, the Municipality of Quito recalled that the capacity in public transport in the capital is 75%.
This decision is derived from the request of the National COE to the GADs and municipalities of the country to request this document; since in intra, interprovincial and tourist transport, the vaccination certificate, with the two doses or the unit dose of the vaccines, is a requirement for passengers, operators and drivers.
Epidemiological situation of the capital
In the Metropolitan District, the mayor explained, the increase in cases in the last three weeks has been 900, 12,000 and currently 1,600 infected patients.
He added that hospital capacity is 86% in health homes that receive Covid-19 patients; while in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) the occupancy level is 74%.
According to the report of the Ministry of Health, until this January 11, in Quito there are 193,338 infected people; While in the entire province of Pichincha there are 208,982 confirmed cases of Covid-19.
