Luis was 16 years old when he arrived in Ecuador. He worked in an ice cream parlor in Riobamba, but the pandemic hit and he lost his job. Now, in his 20s, he returns to Venezuela with the Plan Vuelta a la Patria, which is promoted by his government.

The Venezuelan consul in Quito, Pedro Sassone, commented on the support for his compatriots who wish to return to their country. “It is a program of a social, humanistic nature. It is the activation of the right of return ”, he added.
The diplomat mentioned that the people who have returned have different social needs and were not given the plans for economic and social sustainability in the country, so they have the need to return. “It has been an important life experience to live abroad, some positive, others hard, but the country awaits its people,” he said.
The economic situation, health or family are some of the reasons that have motivated 5,363 people who have returned from Ecuador to Venezuela, since the beginning of this plan in 2018. In the world, there are more than 26 thousand returnees.
Two flights were scheduled in November. Some left Quito by land and in Guayaquil boarded the plane back to their country. Those who wish to participate in this program must submit an application at the diplomatic headquarters of Venezuela. Since 2020, the year that the pandemic began, the number of applicants has increased. The Venezuelan authorities are preparing new flights for next year.
