“The Omicron variant could be predominant in Ecuador”, alert epidemiologist

The epidemiologist Andrea Gómez referred to the country’s health situation regarding the circulation of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 and warned that this alteration may become predominant in the coming weeks.

“It is likely that in a few weeks the Omicron variant will begin to be prevalent in our country, as it has happened in the rest of the world,” Gómez anticipated.
The specialist expressed her concern about the increase in infections and said that one of the problems is that not only the Omicron variant circulates, but now the Delta variant also circulates.

According to the epidemiological curve of the Ministry of Health, Gómez pointed out, there is a not so accelerated increase in cases of coronavirus and added that “what we are experiencing is an effect of the October, November and December holidays and the idea is to avoid an increase of cases next year ».

“The problem we have with this variant is that many people can be infected at the same time, which could lead to increased pressure on the health system,” she indicated.
She also claimed that the health system “lowered its guard”, which has been reflected in the reduction of intensive care beds.

Regarding the symptoms presented by people infected with the Omicron variant, the epidemiologist explained that this alteration has the same symptoms of the Delta variant, such as loss of smell and taste, headache, fever, fatigue, respiratory distress and decreased saturation.

The expert called on the public not to neglect biosecurity measures and comply with the use of a mask, social distancing and hand washing.
