UN concerns over situation in the West Bank

(Prensa Latina) Expressing concern over a fragile and deteriorating security situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, UN Special Coordinator for the region Tor Wennesland stressed that rising levels of violence should be a clear warning to the international community to take action in order to prevent further bloodshed.

As he informed the UN Security Council (UNSC), the situation in that Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory takes the risk of deteriorating a bit further, and that could also affect the Gaza Strip and undermine cessation of hostilities.

Therefore, he stressed, it is critical that all parties take immediate steps to reduce tensions and restore calm.

Since September 29, Israeli security forces have killed 12 Palestinians, including a woman and four children. In addition, he added, 39 Palestinians, including four children, were injured by Israeli settlers or other Jewish civilians.

On the other hand, two Israelis died and some thirty were injured, including members of the Tel Aviv security forces.

These increasing levels of violence that we have recently seen in the occupied Palestinian territory should be a clear warning to all of us, Mr. Wennesland said.

If they are not addressed, another wave of destructive and bloody violence could be unleashed, he warned, while calling for action to prevent that from happening.
