UN Arbitrary Detention Working Group calls for the urgent release of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention visited the country on September 9, 2021 in order to learn about the current situation of the former Vice President of the Republic, Jorge Glas, in the Latacunga prison. After this visit, this body issued its opinion on the situation of Jorge Glas and asked the Government of Ecuador to adopt the necessary measures to protect his safety and well-being, including his early release or other non-custodial measures.

This body issued Opinion No. 39/2021 (Ecuador) regarding the case of former Vice President Glas and expressed its deep concern about his current situation and the dangerous conditions he faces in this detention center.

According to the source, Mr. Glas Espinel has received death threats during his detention at the Cotopaxi Social Rehabilitation Center. In addition, recently other prisoners of the Center have lost their lives due to acts of violence that occurred inside the prison ”.

Given this, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention requested that the Government of Ecuador adopt the necessary measures to protect the life of Jorge Glas.

“The Working Group urges the Government of Ecuador to take immediate action to protect the safety and well-being of Mr. Glas Espinel, including the granting of alternative measures to detention, including early release or other non-custodial measures.”

Similarly, the agency decided to refer this case to various instances such as the Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest possible level of physical and mental health; to the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and to the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, in order that they also hear their case, because to date the Ecuadorian State has failed to comply with the Precautionary measures granted by the IACHR in favor of Glas in 2019.
