The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) ratified its support for the report of the Constitutional Guarantees Commission of the National Assembly, in which President Guillermo Lasso is linked.
In addition, they expressed their support for the president of the Legislative Board, Fernando Cabascango, as well as the members who supported him in this investigation. They point out that they did not give in “to political pressure external to the Assembly, carrying out their work in full compliance with the Constitution and the procedures of the legislative power.”
The indigenous organization will be vigilant about what they describe as “possible opaque pacts” made by some assembly members of Pachakutik. This, after the head of the ruling National Accord (BAN) bench, Juan Fernando Flores, spoke that several PK legislators support the government’s position and reject the report.
“The assembly members who have launched accusations about irregularities in the construction of the report, as a form of sabotage and delegitimization of the work carried out, will have to verify the irresponsible statements made in different media,” says the Governing Council of Conaie, chaired by Leonidas Iza, in reference to the legislator Édgar Quezada, who voted in favor, but later retracted at the moment of ratifying his vote.
They emphatically condemned the political persecution against social leaders and people who have shown an active role in the investigations, as well as alleged legal actions “against 6 assembly members.”
“We reject the attempts at division that are being made to destabilize CONAIE and the popular and plurinational front, which has insisted on the non-observance of the ethical pact by President Lasso,” the statement said.
The Commission’s report, in its first recommendation, indicates that there was a constitutional breach on the part of the Ecuadorian President, when registering his candidacy when he still possessed assets in tax havens.
After the dialogue with the Government, Iza mentioned that, against him, they raised a criminal process for the protests of October 2019. “We have not run,” he said. Now, he asks the President to go to the National Assembly to give explanations in this regard.
