As stressed by Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, it is critical that all parties in Ethiopia take serious, pressing measures to cut down violence, especially among different ethnic groups.

According to a Nderitu´s statement, hate speech for ethnic and religious reasons, displacement of populations and destruction of property are too worrying at this time.

She urged for winding down tensions and fostering a national dialogue supported by UN and African Union to address present crises and causes of differences.

The international community must commit to supporting ongoing mediation efforts and helping to open up new options for peace, she said, while calling on local religious leaders and actors “to help counteract the seeds of division and unite communities.”

This growing instability and violence in Ethiopia happens ahead of a historical context of inter-ethnic clashes, human rights violations and a lack of accountability, Wairimu Nderitu stated.

There is no other choice but supporting efforts aimed at ending military confrontations and promoting talks to restore peace and tability, said Russian diplomat Anna Evstigneeva.
