Resources for universities, ministries and other entities will be less in 2022

The resources planned for 2022 will be less for the universities, various ministries, the Superintendency of Companies, the National Electoral Council and the Attorney General’s Office, according to the budget proforma sent by the Executive to the National Assembly.

Although the proforma amounts to USD 33,809.7 million, a figure higher than the USD 31,146 million of the codified budget as of August 2021. In it, there are several items that are adjusted and others that grow.

At the moment, the 2021 proforma has not yet been approved by the Assembly, which is why comparisons are made with the codified budget for August.

In the case of universities, there would be a cut of at least USD 97 million.

In September, the rector of the University of Cuenca, María Augusta Hermida, expressed her concern about the budget proforma presented by the Executive, because beyond the reduction of resources she said that the same item was no longer received in 2020 and that added together they would be like USD 194 million less for higher education.

Since the government of Lenín Moreno and now with that of Guillermo Lasso, universities have suffered cuts.

The budget proforma has generated debate since its presentation, especially in the educational field because even scholarships for students with economic resources will be affected.

Although there is also a reduction in the budget of the Presidency and the National Assembly, in relation to what was initially budgeted in 2020.

In August, there was already talk -even- that, of the 18 ministries, some were going to reduce their income and others not. For example, Education, Health, Work and Tourism would have more resources.
