The price of a box of bananas for international sale will remain at USD 6.25 during 2021. This was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock this Sunday, October 24.
The cost would have been set by a consensus between the representatives of the producers and exporters who participated in the table of the Consultative Council convened for that purpose last Friday. Although the producers clarified that they did not agree with the new price.
Franklin Torres, president of the National Banana Federation, which groups 17 associations in the country, affirmed this Sunday that the new value has not been accepted, despite the fact that the parties signed an act.
The producers indicated that this value will have consequences for the sector, because they asked that the box of bananas cost USD 7.50, claiming an increase in the cost of inputs, the expected salary increase, among other expenses to face the arrival of the Fusarium to their farms.
For Torres, that value will translate into fewer boxes sold for the following year.
Meanwhile, exporters, who support the measure of maintaining the cost, believe that this will prevent the sector from continuing to lose competitiveness in the international market.
