UN chief warns about sustainable development risks

United Nations, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres on Monday said that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are at risk of failing amid an uneven recovery from global health crisis.

As reported by Guterres´ Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, during his speech at the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD15), Guterres called for reversing such a trend through a bold global recovery, sustainable and inclusive.

Now the world is moving in the wrong direction and decades of progress on sustainable development issues are slipping before our eyes, Guterres stressed.

For this reason, I urge to reverse such a panorama through a Covid-19 pandemic recovery that benefits everyone, since it now happens in a very uneven way and leaves a large part of humanity behind.

So far, Guterres explained, 80% of investments for economic reactivation remain in developed countries and not in the most needy, and those rich nations are the ones that monopolize most of the Covid-19 vaccine doses.

The UN Secretary-General also expressed that island developing states view the future with concern and listen to the words of world leaders, but see no actions.

For this reason, Guterres reiterated his call on donors and banks to allocate at least 50% of their climate support financing towards adaptation and resilience.
