United Nations, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary-General´s Special Representative Helen La Lime on Monday warned about the alarming situation in Haiti amid a complex political, humanitarian and insecurity crisis.
According to her, Haiti is currently experiencing one of the most critical periods in its recent history and it is so difficult to imagine an end to the seemingly endless crisis.
Following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and the devastating earthquake on August, national and local elections were postponed, La Lime recalled.
We hope that political and civil society leaders will continue to work together around a common project that helps foster a calmer scenario to take decisive actions and enact pivotal reforms, she considered.
Meanwhile, she explained, insecurity soared in Port-au-Prince, where kidnappings are on the rise afresh and gangs extend their control to large areas of the capital.
Likewise, La Lime reported that the Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has expressed his commitment to create minimum conditions for holding legislative, local and presidential elections.
In a positive step, he said, actors from political sectors and civil society organizations signed an agreement, which includes the establishment of a new provisional electoral council, the inclusion of the diaspora, as well as the holding of elections for the second half of 2022.
Now the UN mission in Haiti lives in a race against time to guarantee children can go back to school, farmers do not miss coming planting season, and displaced people return to their homes as soon as possible, she noted.
