President Lasso responds to Pandora Papers revelations

According to the President, his taxes have been declared and the corresponding taxes have been paid in Ecuador.

The President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, issued a statement to respond to the publication made by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) called “Pandora Papers”, which relates an “offshore network” of the President and how he used companies in tax havens to keep your money abroad.

“Pandora Papers” expose the hidden owners of offshore companies, secret bank accounts, private jets, yachts, mansions and works of art of Picasso, Banksy and other masters by various leaders and leaders worldwide. This publication was the largest leak in the history of the ICIJ and contains 2.94 terabytes of confidential information from 14 service providers abroad.

President Lasso asserted that he does not own properties in tax havens, because he “got rid” of them before running as a presidential candidate. In the same way, he defended his assets and said that it is the result of his work at Banco de Guayaquil, where he has structured investments through a local trust and not in international banks.

In the publication there are 14 Latin American leaders, of those, 11 have already left power and 3 remain in charge of their country: the Ecuadorian Guillermo Lasso, the Chilean Sebastián Piñera and the Dominican Luis Abinader.

In this context, Lasso assured that he complies with or stipulated in Ecuadorian laws and that his assets in offshore companies were dissolved before running as a presidential candidate.

“I comply with and have complied at all times with the Organic Law for the application of the Popular Consultation carried out on February 19, 2017, which prohibits popularly elected candidates and public servants from owning property in tax havens. As the same publication acknowledges, most of the mentioned companies were legally dissolved in the past and, with those that do exist, I have no connection ”.

In addition, he assured that his assets are declared in the declaration of assets rendered before the General Comptroller of the State.

“It is the result of my lifelong work at Banco de Guayaquil. All my income has been declared and they have paid the corresponding taxes in Ecuador, having made me one of the largest personal contributors in the country ”, he concluded.
