Covid-19 main cause of death in Uruguay

(Prensa Latina) Covid-19 was the leading cause of death in Uruguay in the first semester of the year, reported today the Public Health Ministry, with worrying reopenings of activities in the short term ahead.

Of the 22,324 deaths in that period, 4,940, or 20 percent, were caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the cause of the pandemic disease.

According to the statistics of lethality in illnesses, deaths due to circulatory problems and cancer, which exceeded the number of 4,000, followed.

Scientists here agree that the relaxation of social interactions ordered by the Government should have defined protocols and warned not to lose sight of the entry into the country of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

For the former president of the Society of Clinical Infectious Diseases, Fabio Grill, the current low numbers of infections and admissions to intensive care wards ‘must be protected and not mortgaged’ and his main concern lies in the reopening of the borders and the arrival of ships from other high-risk countries.
