(Prensa Latina) The Socialist Party of Uruguay on Monday appointed its secretary general and deputy Gonzalo Civila as a candidate for the presidency of the Broad Front in the internal election slated for December.
According to a statement issued by its Central Committee, several political parties and groups spoke in favor during a Sunday session of the Central Committee via zoom.
Some days before, the Brazo Libertador party, a member of the left-wing coalition, proposed former minister of Labor and Social Security, Ernesto Murro, to be appointed for the election, whom they presented as a true Broad Front follower, good manager, an independent figure and good negotiator.
Murro was one of the first shortlisted candidates to run for president of the republic in the 2019 election, but withdrew from the race due to the little support received.
The plenary of the Broad Front will meet again on August 28 to determine the mechanism by which it will elect its new national and departmental authorities, among the options of proclaiming them by consensus in the October 2 Congress or by simultaneous adhesion and several candidacies on December 12.
Some months ago, the Popular Participation Movement, led by former President Jose Mujica and the Communist Party, supported candidate Marcos Carambula, due to his prestige and authority in his work to unite the different sectors of the Broad Front.
Carambula accepted on the condition that it were a single agreed term, but recently wrote a letter to the Political Table of the Broad Front saying he was going to withdraw because ‘biology rules,’ after consulting with his family.
