China declares state of emergency due to torrential rains

(Prensa Latina) China enabled the emergency mechanism to deal with the damage caused by another strong round of thunderstorms and downpours that occurred this weekend in the central and southwestern provinces.

The plan focuses mainly on Shanxi, Hebei and Henan, as the rains caused the overflow of multiple rivers, causing floods, mudslides and landslides on public roads.

Preliminary estimates put the number of people whose homes have suffered damage or who have lost their homes at around 80 thousand, while press reports show cuts in electricity, water and telecommunications services.

Rescue brigades work on transporting evacuees to safer areas, removal of debris and rehabilitation of interrupted services.

China is experiencing another rainy season with a devastating balance, especially in Henan, where last month’s rainfall caused 302 deaths and millions of economic losses.

The Government remains vigilant and seeks to minimize the effects as much as possible.
