Haiti makes slow progress in Covid-19 vaccination campaign

(Prensa Latina) Haiti is currently making slow progress in the Covid-19 immunization campaign in at least two departments of the country, with nearly 400 vaccines administrated daily.

From mid-July to date, 3,028 people have received the first dose of the vaccine and 341 others have completed their cycle, according to the most recent report by the Ministry of Health (MSPP).

On Tuesday, the Health Ministry announced the beginning of the Covid-19 vaccination at the Justinien Hospital in Cap-Haitien, the country’s second-largest city.

At the moment, only six health centers are administrating the vaccine for free, five of them are located in Port-au-Prince, the capital.

Authorities received in early July the first shipment of vaccines, a donation from the United States of 500,000 doses of Moderna shots, through Covax mechanism, launched by the World Health Organization.

In recent months, the Covid-19 lethality rate rose to 2.69 percent in Haiti.

The country has accumulated 20,000 coronavirus contagions and 537 deaths since the pandemic broke out in March 2020.
