(Prensa Latina) The State Atomic Energy Corporation of Russia (Rosatom) reported the start of works on the reactor for the Bolivian Center for Research and Development of Nuclear Technology (Cidtn).
Based in the Bolivian city of El Alto, the construction ‘has no equivalent anywhere in the world: the platform of the center is the highest (4,000 above sea level) of all where nuclear technology facilities were built,’ Rosatom indicated.
According to authorities, the facility is one of the largest projects of the Eurasian nation in Latin America and opens up new opportunities for export innovations from the Russian nuclear industry to countries in the region, TASS news agency noted.
The Cidtn will count on advanced technologies that can significantly improve the living standards of the Bolivian population and will be a drive for the development of science and high technologies in the Andean nation.
The Russian Corporation emphasized that the project offers high-tech solutions for a wide variety of sectors of the economy, including production of radio-pharmaceuticals for the treatment of cancers and cardiovascular diseases and processing of agricultural products to ensure food safety.
The new research and development center will increase the useful life of food products, increase the volume of agricultural production, environmental studies and rational use of natural resources, as well as the training of nuclear industry specialists.
On March 6, 2021, Russia and Bolivia signed an intergovernmental cooperation agreement for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, which included the construction of the center in the city of El Alto.
