Prison crisis in Ecuador leaves 22 people deprived of liberty dead

After the incidents recorded this Wednesday, July 21, in the Guayas N ° 1 and Cotopaxi N ° 1 Deprivation of Liberty Centers, the authorities reported that 22 deprived of liberty died. Fourteen in the Latacunga jail and eight in the Penitentiary.

The Prosecutor’s Office reported that in the case of the Cotopaxi social rehabilitation center, the 14 bodies were transferred to the Ambato Forensic Center and the respective procedures are being carried out. In the Guayas penitentiary, indications were raised for the corresponding investigations. In this confrontation, three policemen were injured.

The general commander of the Police, Tannya Varela, reported that the tactical units entered the Penitentiary and control was taken.

The wounded police officers are stable in the hospital, the commander said.

Until 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 22, the Police announced on the same social network that 78 people deprived of liberty were recaptured, after they escaped from the Cotopaxi prison.

Police and military worked in a coordinated manner to prevent the inmates’ intentions.

Hours earlier, in a statement, the National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI) explained that the deceased inmates of the Penitentiary were from pavilions 7 and 8.

10 people deprived of liberty died in the Cotopaxi prison, about 35 injured and six policemen injured. But in the course of the hours, the Prosecutor’s Office presented other figures.
