Warning in Uruguay of possible increase in Covid-19 infections

(Prensa Latina) Uruguayan infectious disease specialist Eduardo Salvio warned today about a possible increase in Covid-19 infections if not keeping health care due to false confidence after drop in numbers of cases.

According to the National Emergency System, 308 new positive cases of the disease were detected in the last hours, there are 6,612 active patients and 18 people died for a total of 5,853.

The specialist said that they also get to experience a sense of apparent security given by the immunizing vaccine administered to just over 50 percent of the population.

‘The SARS-CoV-2 virus (causing the disease) is in all this increased mobility and especially in the contact of groups still not vaccinated, it can increase infections and no one should be surprised’, the expert warned.

Salvio recalled that vaccines are not 100 percent effective and ‘you always have a chance to get infected and pass on the virus even if you do not get sick.’

In this sense, he refered to what happened in Europe where last year there were huge peaks in infections and now too, ‘for the worse, because people confuse the fact of suspending some measures and take off the mask and there are crowded bars.’

Despite contrary recommendations from the dissolved Honorary Scientific Consultant Group, the Uruguayan President, Luis Lacalle Pou, authorized the reopening of theaters, cinemas, shopping complex food courts, swimming pools and amateur sports.

The Minister of Public Health, Daniel Salinas, recently indicated the imminence of the aggressive variant of SARS-CoV-2, the cause of Covid-19, entering the national territory.
