(Prensa Latina) The United Nations and other international organizations should support the Caribbean Community (Caricom) as the best factor to seek a peaceful solution in Haiti, said today the Caribbean diplomat and academician, Ronald Sanders.
The ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to the United States and the Organization of American States stressed that few organizations enjoy as much confidence among Haitians as this regional grouping of 15 members, including Haiti itself.
In an article published by the Caribbean News Global website on the Haitian situation after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, Sanders recalled that a day before the assassination, a Caricom summit expressed its support for talks between the contending parties.
That meeting expressed ‘the Community’s willingness to extend its good services to achieve a peaceful solution, led by Haiti, to the current impasse’, which ‘would involve both facilitation and mediation’.
Caricom leaders were almost clairvoyant in showing their alarm at the rapid deterioration of security in that country ‘which called into question the State’ s ability to protect the population. Few knew that the state had become incapable even of protecting the president,’ Sanders added.
The article argues for the need to set up a broad-based interim government to prepare conditions for presidential, legislative and municipal elections scheduled for next September.
What happens in the coming weeks will determine whether that country will sink into further chaos or stability will be established, Sanders said.
