The Minister of Culture, María Elena Machuca, repealed the ministerial agreement that ended with the free museums and repositories in charge of this State Portfolio. In this new agreement, she provides that, once again, it be freely accessible to nationals and foreigners.
The former minister of the branch, Julio Bueno, approved the elimination of free access to museums and repositories and ordered the administrative departments and Financial Management to prepare a joint technical report, in which the viability of the establishment of fees for the entry of citizens to the repositories it manages.
Despite the questioning of the artistic cultural sector of the country, the then minister did not back down.
Machuca’s decision, among other aspects, is based on the technical report issued by the Undersecretary of Social Memory, Alfredo Espinosa Andrade, in which he states that: “To promote the community meeting in the repositories of social memory and encourage its use by nationals and foreigners, it is pertinent, appropriate and opportune to determine the free nature of the use of these services and public spaces of culture “
The minister ordered the Financial Administrative Coordination to coordinate with the corresponding areas to state in the institutional budget the resources and funds necessary to guarantee the operation and security of the museums and repositories.
The document came into effect on June 1, 2021 and instructs the Undersecretariat of Social Memory and the Decentralized Operating Entities of the Ministry to carry it out.
