Judge ratifies preventive detention for the Comptroller General of the State of Ecuador

The surrogate Comptroller General of the State, Pablo Celi, will remain in prison 4 in Quito, after Judge Felipe Córdova denied the revocation of the preventive prison against him, in the case for alleged organized crime.

It is Celi’s third failed attempt to defend herself in freedom. The justice denied the appeal to preventive detention and rejected a Habeas Corpus.

The still comptroller was arrested on April 13 and is being investigated in the Las Torres case, along with his brother Esteban, the brother of the late former secretary José Augusto Briones and others. The Prosecutor’s Office investigates the disappearance of five glosses in favor of the company Nolimit, a supplier of Petroecuador.

Celi returned to the detention center on June 15, after spending six days at the Eugenio Espejo Hospital, after testing positive for COVID-19. His family demands that he be allowed to defend himself in freedom due to his state of health.

The judge also denied the revocation of the preventive prison of Adolfo Agusto Briones, who will remain in jail 4 in Quito. In addition, he ordered the same measure for Roy C. and Pedro S., for failing to comply with the periodic presentation.

The Office of the Comptroller General of the State is in non-existent, after the resignation of Valentina Zárate, as deputy comptroller. This Wednesday, the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS) issued an exhortation for Celi to present his resignation.
