Puebla Group calls to respect electoral result in Peru

(Prensa Latina) The Puebla Group congratulated candidate from the Free Peru (Peru Libre) party, Pedro Castillo, over his electoral victory and called to respect that people’s will shown at the polls.

In a statement, the progressive alliance, of which two incumbent presidents are members, several former presidents and personalities from 17 countries, called on representatives from all Peruvian institutions to fully respect the people’s vote.

It also noted that in the climate of polarization in which the election was held, it is imperative that all political and institutional players accept the election results, and any kind of plans or calls to future democratic destabilizations must be dropped down.

In the last few hours, the Free Peru candidate described a measure from the National Election Jury (JNE) that helps his rival Keiko Fujimori’s efforts to reverse his victory at the polls, as illegal.

‘If it is true that the JNE intends to extend the deadline to present nullities of ballots, it would be violating the electoral order,’ the rural teacher, who was the frontrunner of the official vote count of the runoff, said.
