(Prensa Latina) The Spanish government on Wednesday announced an aid of 15 million vaccines for Latin American countries to help them fight the SARS- CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the Covid-19 pandemic.
This aid will be provided under the Covax international solidarity vaccine program, President Pedro Sanchez said at a press conference.
Therefore, this country’s commitment with Latin America amounts to 22.5 million coronavirus vaccine doses, the local daily El País reported.
Sanchez spoke about Spain’s involvement in the ACT-Accelerator initiative to boost the development, production and equitable access to RT PCR tests, treatments and vaccines.
The president also highlighted this country’s participation in the World Vaccine Alliance, with a donation of 50 million euros.
Last week, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said that Latin America, which has many of the 170,721,000 cases in the world, only received 8.6 percent of the much-needed vaccines.
Countries such as Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Argentina received most of the 8.6 percent of the aforementioned vaccines for Latin America, the foreign minister clarified.
The Covax mechanism is far from the goals that encouraged us, most of the States involved in it and has hardly distributed more than 10 percent of vaccines in the world, he stressed.
