The President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Mauricio Claver-Carone, will make his first visit to Ecuador and will hold meetings with the Chief Executive, Guillermo Lasso, his work team, with members of the National Assembly and representatives of the Civil society. The official will be in the country from May 26 to 29.
Claver-Carone indicated that the IDB has a loan of more than USD 1 billion ready for Ecuador and will deliver the resources this year, but that money should be invested in strengthening customs and tax administration, improving digital connectivity, and strengthening access to justice and provide a financial mechanism that continues to facilitate the purchase of vaccines.
In this context, he indicates that tax reforms should be applied in the region; since “more taxes are not needed, but better taxes” because in Latin America there is a high rate of evasion.
“It is something that Lasso has also talked about. For this reason, one of the projects we have is “Strengthening Customs and SRI to improve collection and expand the formality of companies.”
In the same way, the head of the IDB acknowledged that they are concerned about the new agreement that Ecuador could have with the IMF, since it is very difficult to achieve political support in this regard, but the official admitted that in this government there is no risk as high as in the Moreno government.
On the other hand, he said that vaccination should be a priority issue for the country, if it wants to overcome the economic crisis. Given this, he indicated that they will support President Lasso in his initiative to vaccinate 9 million people in the first 100 days of his administration.
