EU condemns attack against civilians in Peru

(Prensa Latina) Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Wednesday described the May 23 attack in Peru as ‘atrocious’, in which 16 civilians were killed by armed groups and drug traffickers.

The EU condemns the killing of civilians, including children, in western Vraem region. That crime cannot go unpunished, Borrell posted on his Twitter account.

The massacre took place at a bar located in Vizcatan del Ene district and among the victims are the owner of the bar and two sisters with their daughters. The remaining victims were local residents and customers, according to investigating authorities.

The event occurred amid the electoral campaign with a view to the June 6 elections in this nation, in which neoliberal candidate Keiko Fujimori and leftist candidate Pedro Castillo will vie for the presidency of Peru.

On Tuesday, Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti described the crime as a ‘national tragedy’ and added that ‘no group, of any orientation or ideology, should use that tragedy for political purposes.’
