Colombian foreign minister’s stance on Peace Agreement criticized

(Prensa Latina) The statements by Colombian Foreign Minister Marta Lucia Ramirez in an opinion column, alluding negatively to the Peace Agreement, drew numerous criticisms.

The article caused reactions of rejection among the Colombian population that has been in the streets since last April 28, demanding, among other things, compliance with the Agreement reached in 2016 between the State and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-Army (FARC-EP).

Renowned journalist and columnist Daniel Samper Ospina assured that the tenure of Marta Lucia Ramirez as foreign minister got off on the wrong foot, after she blamed the present of the Colombians on the peace process, ‘perhaps the only thing we are valued for abroad.’

Contrary to what Ramirez pointed out, former Minister of the Interior Juan Fernando Cristo considered that the non-implementation of the Peace Agreement is one of the essential reasons for citizen outrage and this is understood by the international community, which is calling for comprehensive implementation.

He assured that the most serious thing about the Foreign Minister’s statements is that it sends the signal that she seems to prefer a country in which social conflicts continue to be processed by means of armed conflict and not through mobilizations, strikes and protests, and they be resolved by the way of dialogue.

Ramirez, who took over as Foreign Minister after Claudia Blum’s resignation, wrote that during the referendum campaign on the agreement with the FARC-EP, she repeatedly insisted that point 2.2 presented the risk of having Colombia move from a country in conflict to a country ‘in protest mode and strike mode’, ‘and so it is happening’.

The minister also attacked in this way the mass mobilizations demanding changes from the government of Ivan Duque, and have persisted since last April 28.
