Ecuador registers 741 new infections and 87 more deaths in the last 24 hours. This May 17, 2021, the country reaches 410,870 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 19,786 deaths due to the pandemic.
According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health, 14,459 people died with a positive diagnosis and 5,327 died with suspicion of carrying the respiratory virus.
Hospital occupancy remains at an average of 1,800 in the last week. This Monday, there are 1,824 patients: 1,224 stable and 600 with a reserved prognosis. While 88 more people were discharged from hospital.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there are 354,499 recovered patients, representing 86.44% of the total infected. In the last week, from May 10 to 16, there were 11,621 more people who overcame the disease.
According to the president of the National Emergency Operations Committee (COE), Juan Zapata, the weekend of May 15 and 16 is the first to record a decrease in all the figures that are measured to control the pandemic. He said that on May 20 they will give a full report on the epidemiological situation and deaths, after a month of a state of emergency.
