In social networks the collapse of public hospitals in Ecuador is reflected. They ask for a bed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a relative. They ask for oxygen, medicine. Hospitals have been working beyond capacity for 17 days.
Beds are no longer available. They receive them in chairs, they even accommodate them on mats on the floor of the emergency room. The images reflect a health system at the limit and this Tuesday, April 13, 2021, a new peak of hospitalized patients reaches a new peak. There are 1,750 internees: 1,150 stable hospitalized and 600 with a reserved prognosis.
Since March 25, there has been a sustained increase in hospitalized patients with an average of 1,600 patients per day and, in the last five days, with an average of 1,700 each day.
If a hospitalized person becomes complicated and must go to intensive care, there is a waiting list of more than 100 people to access a bed in the ICU. Quito hospitals, such as the IESS del Sur, report admissions of more than 300 people with symptoms. In addition, in the capital the positivity of the tests carried out is 25.3%, while the excess mortality increased to 84.7%.
At the national level, infections continue to increase. This Tuesday, 519 new infections and 53 more deaths were registered in the last 24 hours. In total, the country has 347,589 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 17,351 deaths from the pandemic.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 298,604 recovered patients have been registered, representing 86.10% of the total infected. In the last week, from April 5 to 11, 8,290 more people overcame the disease.
Pichincha adds 244 positive cases and 23 deaths. The province has a total of 120,685 diagnosed and 2,938 deceased. Quito registers 233 more infected and amounts to 111,516 infected.
The British variant of COVID-19 is already circulating in Ecuador and yesterday, April 12, the Minister of Health, Camilo Salinas, confirmed the first patient with the Brazilian variant.
