After five years of publication in the Official Registry of the Civil Identity and Data Management Law, the Civil Registry enabled the change of gender in all headquarters nationwide.
Since 2016, the date that the change from “sex” to “gender” in the identity card was approved, the Civil Registry has only met these requirements in four cities of the country, violating the right of trans people in the rest of the country.
The Civil Registry provides the service since August 3 of that year. Initially, he informed that it will be held in the main agencies of four cities: Quito (only at the Iñaquito headquarters); Guayaquil (in the Center); Cuenca (in San Blas); and Manta (at the Tarqui headquarters).
Five years later, the institution has just enabled this service at the national level. Trans people living in other provinces had to travel to the nearest city headquarters to complete this procedure.
The procedure can now be done at any headquarters, in person and the requirements to request the gender registration service are: Be of legal age, valid identity card of the applicant, and have two witnesses over 18 years of age, who must present your identity card.
The service has no cost, but, as it is necessary to obtain a new document with the change, it is charged as a renewal of the identity card at a cost of $ 16. In case the person wishes to change their name, at that very moment It will be free, but if they do it another day, it will cost $ 12.
Since August 3, 2016, when the gender change was enabled, the Civil Registry reports 1,777 people who have required this service.
