Brazil’s opposition is unified by the dismissal of Bolsonaro

Bolsonaro has 105 impeachment requests against him

This Friday, representatives of nine opposition parties in Brazil will discuss the impeachment requests of President Jair Bolsonaro that are currently in the Chamber of Deputies.

The representatives of the Workers’, Brazilian Communist, Popular Unity, Socialism and Freedom, Sustainability Network, Green, Labor Democrat, Citizenship and Brazilian Socialist parties will analyze “the possibility of unifying the requests for impeachment in the Chamber of Deputies” and discuss ways to mobilize a campaign to politically prosecute the president responsible for the health crisis in the country.

So far, Bolsonaro has 105 impeachment requests against him. Social movements, entities, health personalities, and even right-wing organizations, such as the Brazilian Social Democracy parties and the Free Brazil Movement, have submitted requests for impeachment.

On the other hand, the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, rejected opening an impeachment process against Bolsonaro.

Revanchism cannot be used to initiate an exoneration and it is “necessary to evaluate the judicial aspects, analyze the dissatisfaction that exists before a minister (of the Court) or with the President of the Republic,” said Pacheco.

In addition, he eliminated two requests submitted by senators to investigate the destination of transfers of federal funds to municipalities and states, through a Federal Government Management Board.

Demands to replace Bolsonaro have increased after Brazil’s health, political and institutional crisis. At the beginning of April, law students from the country simultaneously presented more than 35 requests for impeachment against Bolsonaro at the seat of Parliament.
