A new variant of COVID-19 was detected in Ecuador. The Minister of Health, Camilo Salinas, confirmed that it is the Brazilian variant, which according to several studies is more contagious than the other types.
The first patient is a man who is hospitalized in intensive care in the city of Loja.
Salina reported that they will investigate the route and the people with whom he had contact to apply an epidemiological fence and prevent this variant from spreading in the country.
The Institute of Microbiology of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito confirmed this finding.
According to information from the Institute, the person became infected in Yantzaza, Zamora Chinchipe province.
What is known so far about P.1, or the Brazilian variant, is that it could be up to two times more transmissible than the previous virus.
The Minister of Health also recalled that four people were confirmed with the variant of the United Kingdom, a strain that has been in the inhabitants of Los Ríos, canton of Valencia since December 2020.
