Chilean government approval plummets

(Prensa Latina) The approval of Chile’s president, Sebastián Piñera, and his government to face Covid-19, has plummeted in recent weeks, reveals the Plaza Publica survey, published today.

The weekly survey, by the Cadem consulting firm, considered close to government positions, indicates that the approval of the president’s action remains at 20 percent, while 70 out of every hundred people reject it and ten percent do not know or did not respond.

But the worst part is borne by the government as a whole, because in five weeks support for the way in which the confrontation with Covid-19 has been managed went from 58 to 38 percent, with a loss of 20 points.

Such results correspond to the worsening of the health crisis, which throughout March and so far in April has reached unprecedented levels with the highest numbers of infection, active patients and hospitalized in intensive care units, whose capacity is under constant threat of collapse.

Such a situation seems to have even overshadowed the successful vaccination campaign against Covid-19 that the country is carrying out, in which almost half of the 15 million Chileans that make up the target population have already received at least the first dose, which is evaluated positively by 84 percent.

But despite the hopes offered by immunization, 85 percent of those interviewed believe that the country will take more than six months to appreciate a certain normality and 63 percent expressed fear of contagion.

The same percentage of people indicate that the pandemic situation has caused them anxiety, anguish, stress or fatigue.
