Uruguay condemns presence of US Southern Command

(Prensa Latina) The Communist Party of Uruguay (PCU) condemned the visit, starting on Tuesday, of the head of the United States Southern Command, Admiral Craig S. Faller, who intends to ensure Washington’s ‘hegemony in our region.’

The party warned that Faller is pursuing that target ‘under the old excuse of military cooperation, professional education and technical training, assistance in response to pandemics and natural disasters.’

The US Embassy in Montevideo informed on Saturday that ‘this will be the latest in a series of high-level visits by officials highlighting the strong partnership between Uruguay and the US.’

In a statement, the PCU questioned those intentions and noted that ‘the government of President Luis Lacalle Pou gave clear signs of alignment with the US, with the exit of Uruguay from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the support in the Organization of American States (OAS) for the reelection of Secretary General Luis Almagro.

The party noted in particular Uruguay’s return to the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance (TIAR), closely linked to the Southern Command as a logistic and strategic center of rapid deployment and US military structure for Latin America and the Caribbean.

In that regard, the PCU explained that this is why it opposes the training of Uruguayan military personnel in training centers of the Southern Command for armies of countries friendly to Washington.
