Nicolás Issa Wagner announced that the President would need permission from the Assembly to leave the country.
Nicolás Issa Wagner, Secretary General of the Presidency, announced that the President, Lenín Moreno, will not leave the country after completing his term. In the same way, he warned that he could not do it, since to leave Ecuador he would need the permission of the National Assembly, until one year after his term ends, on May 24, 2021.
This, in response to the request presented by the Ombudsman, Freddy Carrión, in the Prosecutor’s Office, to investigate the alleged crimes against humanity that they would have committed in October 2019.
Carrión asked that Lenín Moreno, María Paula Romo, Oswaldo Jarrín, Patricio Carrillo and several of the authorities who were at the forefront of the repression in the protests be prohibited from leaving the country.
Issa Wagner assured that there is no need for this request, since the permission of the Assembly is needed, but, in addition, he indicated that the report would not take into account the repression of the public force.
“Moreno needs the permission of the Assembly for at least one year, so there is no need for that request. And second, in that condition, which I have analyzed, is that the kidnapping of police officers or the fire in the city of Quito, among other things, is not taken into account anywhere.
To conclude, the Secretary General of the Presidency indicated that making a request for something that exists in the Law is to try to generate controversy.
“If at some point those facts or actions have to be investigated, they should also be carried out, but considering all the elements.”
