(Prensa Latina) The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Guinea-Conakry on Thursday reported 28 Ebola cases and 11 deaths altogether, and neighboring states are intensifying precautions due to the epidemic threat.
From February 23 to March 2, laboratories corroborated the contagions of 11 people in North Kivu (DRC) and a rural community of Nzerekore (Republic of Guinea), the institution of the African Union in charge of health issues, Africa CDC, warned.
So far, the DRC have reported 11 cases, 4 deaths and 2 recoveries. On the other hand, Guinea reported 17 cases, 7 deaths and 2 recoveries, noted the organization, whose data were disclosed here by local media.
Africa CDC published on its website that, from February 15 to 28, Sierra Leone investigated 13 alarms in its territory, but all people surveyed tested negative in the molecular biology analysis (Polymerase Chain Reaction, PCR).
For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) corroborated the finding of 3 new Ebola cases in the region of Butembo, in North Kivu, on Monday, so four areas in the DRC have been contaminated due to the resurgence of this virus.
As for West Africa, it is important to remember that the worst Ebola epidemic broke out in late 2013 in eastern Guinea and lasted until 2016, resulting in 11.300 deaths and over 28.500 cases in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to WHO.
Ministers and other government representatives from Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Senegal and Sierra Leone on Tuesday attended a meeting in the capital of Guinea, in order to join forces to fight the current danger.
The forum, inaugurated by Guinean Prime Minister Ibrahima Kassory Fofana, agreed to improve cross-border collaboration, including work with the communities in order to curb the spread of the virus.
