Colombia: Antioquia registers 30.000 disappeared between 1997-2005

The general director of the Search Unit for Disappeared Persons of Colombia, Luz Marina Monzón Cifuentes, said that the department of Antioquia is the region with the highest number of disappeared persons.

“Only in the department of Antioquia, in the period 1997-2005 there were 20.279 disappeared people, 2.710 recruited and 7.618 kidnapped for a total of 30.000 disappeared,” revealed Monzón Cifuentes.

She indicated that in the period 2018-2021, the institution has rescued 97 bodies which have been delivered to relatives, “we have also recovered another 97 in Antioquia and other areas of the country that are in the process of identification,” she added.

Monzón Cifuentes’s pronouncement came after the National Movement of Victims of State Crimes (Movice) delivered a report on March 1 where 906 unidentified bodies were found that could correspond to victims of forced disappearance in the El Universal cemetery, located in the city of Medellín, capital of the department of Antioquia.
