This Wednesday, February 17, 2021, a new batch of vaccines from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer-BioNTech arrived in Quito to combat COVID-19, amid criticism of the vaccination plan and the lack of information on who received the first doses.
The Latam company plane arrived, after 1:00 p.m., 16.380 doses of vaccines shipped in Belgium. This number of vaccines is added to the 8.190 that Ecuador obtained on January 20.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health explained that, with this second batch, 100% of the vaccination of those who received the first doses of Phase Zero or Pilot Plan will be completed. That is, for 4.266 people and there will be 12.114 people for the first dose.
With the new doses, the questioned vaccination plan will continue in 15 provinces: Bolívar, Carchi, Chimborazo, Esmeraldas, Guayas, Imbabura, Los Ríos, Azuay, Cañar, Pichincha, Manabí, Santa Elena, Loja, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas and Sucumbíos . The remaining nine provinces must wait for the next batch to arrive in the country.
The new shipment, with 17.550 doses, is expected to arrive in the week of February 22 and 28.962 vaccines will arrive in the first week of March. According to the schedule published by Health, with the 71.082 doses that would arrive until March, 100% of the staff of COVID-19 Hospitals, public and private, as well as 100% of Gerontological Centers, public and private, would be covered.
At the beginning of the vaccination program, he announced that there are 86.000 doses agreed with Pfizer. To this number they would add five million doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, which would arrive from the end of February, through the COVAX initiative.
