In the country there is no updated data on how many people with cancer died during the coronavirus pandemic.
In Ecuador 15.394 people died from Covid-19 in 2020, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Public Health, this figure is very close to the total number of deaths in the world from cancer in 2020, 15.123. However, in the country there is no has an updated number of deaths from this disease.
The Ministry of Public Health confirmed this Wednesday, February 17, 2021, that 10.671 people died from covid-19, while 4.723 deaths are likely due to the virus.
For its part, Global Cancer Observatory (Globocan), platform of the International Cancer Research Center (IARC), which belongs to the World Health Organization (WHO), confirmed that 15.123 people died with cancer during the past yeear
In the health emergency, the Ecuadorian government focused its efforts on addressing the positive cases of Covid-19, according to several organizations, other priority sectors were neglected.
Diego Jimbo, president of the Agreement Against Cancer, confirms that a deficiency of the health sector in Ecuador is the lack of updated figures on people with cancer, for which, Jimbo affirms that:
“Unfortunately, official figures from the State, to tell us what is happening to people with cancer in the midst of the pandemic, we do not have them.”
The Agreement Against Cancer promotes the creation of a national registry for cancer patients to obtain accurate information on patients in the country and also to create public policies that address priority cases.
