Although voting is not mandatory for residents abroad, Spain together with the United States and Italy is one of the largest Ecuadorian communities in the world.
The Embassy of Ecuador in Spain coordinates security measures with local authorities in order to guarantee that the electoral process is organized and the health of compatriots is protected.
Cristóbal Roldán, Ecuador’s ambassador to Spain, commented that he hopes that absenteeism will not be greater due to fear of the pandemic and called for participation.
According to the Foreign Ministry, more than 410.000 Ecuadorians residing abroad will be able to vote in these elections in electoral precincts authorized by Ecuadorian legations in 43 countries.
62% of this electoral roll is in the constituency of Europe, Asia and Oceania; 31% in Canada and the United States; and 7% in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. Each of them elects two representatives in the National Assembly.
The main concentrations of Ecuadorians are in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Murcia, in Spain; Milan, in Italy; New York and New Jersey in the United States; and Caracas and Santiago de Chile, in Latin America.
